evening. the funerals began today. two of the children killed in newtown, connecticut, on friday have been laid to rest. mourners leaving the service for six-year-old noah pozner were told to keep his memory in their hearts, but hearts are strained to breaking by the senseless loss. at makeshift memorials, parents held their children and tried to comprehend 20 first graders murdered at sandy hook elementary school along with the six staff members who tried to save them. tonight we know more about how it happened and we have a team of correspondents on this tragedy. first we'll go to jim axelrod. >> reporter: at 1:00 this afternoon, the first two funerals began: one in newtown, the other 25 miles away. this woman spoke for many. >> you shouldn't be at a six-year-old's funeral. i mean, it's a devastating event and it's heart breaking and it keeps getting more heart breaking. >> reporter: six-year-old noah pozner was eulogized as a kind, caring, slightly mischef vous boy who'd been looking forward to a buddy's birthday party on saturday. six-year-old jack pinto was described as all boy at his

for their families. the news, coming as the community of newtown begins to mourn, the 26 victims who did not survive on friday t was an emotional memorial ceremony at newtown high school last night. president obama, sitting among the mourners, in the high school, joining community and religious leaders at the service. first though he met privately with each of the families of the victims. what, what an experience that must have been. and you could see, that he was visibly moved when he came out of on the stage and the entire nation has been moved by the events in -- newtown connecticut, 72 hours ago. sandy hook elementary will remain closed indefinitely, perhaps a month or perhaps permanently as the investigation continues and as they learn more about the gunman, adam lanza, what may have motivated this terrible unspeakable crime. rick leventhal joins us live from newtown with the latest on that investigation. rick? >> reporter: megyn, you may have heard paul vance say there were moving vans, collecting furniture of the classroom other equipment from the school so it can be moved to another school,

out! at kmart. >> pelley: it is a sunday of sorrow for newtown, connecticut, and for the nation. this afternoon hundreds of residents walked the road to sandy hook elementary school, where, on friday, 26 people were murdered, 20 of them children in the first grade. president obama has been in newtown tonight for a memorial service. first reports of this tragedy have turned out to be inaccurate. we were told that the gunman's mother was a teacher at the school, that he was allowed in because he was recognized, and that he targeted his mother's classroom with two handguns. tonight we know that all of that is wrong. here's what we do know, as told by people who knew the gunman and by one woman at the school that he approached but did not kill. that woman is sally cox, the school nurse. this picture was taken shortly after she left sandy hook elementary on friday. she's been the school nurse there 15 years. and she told us that friday morning began with comforting routine: 9:10, pledge of allegiance; 9:15, outside doors locked. then came 9:30. >> cox: all of a sudden, i heard a very
